SHLOHMO | The Way U Do

Happy Valentines Day.
L.A. native Henry Laufer, the 21-year-old producer better known as Shlohmo, is a lo-fi beat junkie and field-recording enthusiast, whose crackling, low-BPM compositions update Boards of Canada’s filmstrip-soundtrack wooziness. Laufer grew up listening to “stuff like DJ Shadow, Amon Tobin, M83 stuff with some sort of cinematic vision.” He started making beats when he was 14, but “didn’t really do it with any sort of purpose until I was like 17 or 18. That was also around the time he and his friends, already fans of Flying Lotus, discovered Low End Theory. Shlohmo has rocketed onto our radar screen in recent months with his lo-fi, psychedelic mix of abstract hip-hop, bouncy synth-funk, and breezy trip-hop.
It’s late night on Valentine’s Day and I’ve been itchin’ for love-make songs. As most of you love birds are out and about enjoying this holiday going out on fancy dinners, dressing up, or just saying “fuck it, let’s just fuck” - this it’s a good track if you’re looking for some slow rhythmic vibes in bed. Shlohmo came out of nowhere with a remix from Burial and from there, I knew he was going to hit it big with his beats and productions. “The Way U Do” starts off in a steady pace and when the track start’s to taper off, about a quarter way in, vocals and the quick hip-hop high hats kick into gear knowing something is going to drop. Yeah, none of that dubstep bullshit. Give it two minutes and wait to start moving yourself all over one another, bodies pressed, and making some sexy shit happen.
Second time listening through, yeah, I want to use this for some love-make to happen.
Shlohmo is impressive LIVE and I highly recommend if you don’t know about him.
Anyways, hope you all had a good Valentines Day. What did you do for Valentines Day?
BOY FRIEND | Egyptian Wrinkle

Boy Friend is a recent project from Sleep ∞ Over’s Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brown. They kind of rose out of nowhere with this shoegazey and dreampop sound. It’s interesting really because they don’t really have any type of biography whatsoever on the internet and I have no idea what to write but just wing it not knowing what I can scramble on the internet. It’s a diffucult task, really. Someone needs to write a good last.fm biography soon.
I’ve heard about these two a few months back when they released the track “Egyptian Wrinkle” and didn’t know what to expect since it was just a remix by “The Whendays”. Basically they took the song into this dancey tribal like sound and made their voices shine as the bells chime away in the track. Quite the decent dance remix from a dreampop group, I’d say. Other than that, shoegaze had always been a place that I liked just because of the drone out instrumentals and dreamy vocals that brings you in a daze; something like Lilys or A Sunny Day In Glasglow.
I felt like I’ve been bloggin’ a lot of electronic material lately and I want to slowly merge into the more alternative, hip-hop, etc genre’s. Just need to find that spot on song that is interesting. I’m back from Philly and as most people say “back on the grind”. Seriously, what the fuck? That idiom is retarded. Nonetheless, our society uses it frequently.
So in short, I’m uninspired to write and Boy Friend, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry for giving such a small review on a track that I adore greatly. A mixture of sleep deprivation, hunger, and zoned out isn’t helping. As I write this, this album get’s better and better, trust me. It’s fucking fantastic. Give this a gander and buy it on their bandcamp!

BLONDES | Wine

Blondes, the duo of Sam Haar and Zach Steinman, release their self-titled debut album for RVNG Intl.
Haar and Steinman met at Oberlin College in 2003, where they studied electroacoustic composition and studio art respectively, and became collaborators in a smattering of short-lived experimental outfits. After graduation and stints apart in Oakland and NYC, Haar and Steinman regrouped in Berlin where Blondes was born, eventually settling on Brooklyn for home base.
Blondes are this duo that I didn’t really get into at first but after sometime, it started to grow on me more. I ask myself “Why?” and I guess my answer is that Iwasn’t so interested on their taste of productions but after some time…
“…this shimmery Wine track started to remind me of those hot summer nights in Philly dancing to electro late into the morning.”
Though this track did catch me by surprise just because of how shimmery and climatic it can get to you. Just like like a story, you got your beginning, middle, and end to this track. Have you ever had one of those nights? Where you just stay up real late into the morning and dancing the night away, letting the music suck you in? It’s fucking fantastic. Close your eyes and let your mind loose.
The album drops 2/7 via RVNG Intl

NICOLAS JAAR | Materials
You guys know about Nicolas Jaar right?
Here’s a fan video that is mesmerizing. Love how this whole video is fitting where we’re following a kid explore a dark path in this twisted building, walking through a forest dazed and confused, and then eventually confronting Jaar himself. Quite brilliant, really.
