LC UPDATE: Philly/NYC/Chicago + a Mixtape!

(Listen to “Part 1. Mixtape” by John Khuu)

JOHN KHUU | Part 1. Mixtape”

Hello LC followers,

Hi, hello, this is John from LC. We haven’t done this in awhile but it seems just about time to update you on what’s been going on lately internally within LC. To start things off, we would like to thank you all for supporting us and esp following us as we go through our day to day lives sharing our favorite tracks and such to all of you. We just hit over our 3,000th follower and without your support, we wouldn’t be here right now sharing the love of music. So you might want to know what’s been happening, huh (maybe?)?  Well, we both parted in our separate ways and are working independently in different area’s of the states. Rick is currently doing coverage in the northeast (Philly/NYC) and I’m here doing coverage in Chicago, IL. Here’s my dose of happening’s lately.

On my end of things, this summer has been a total trip so far since the day I left PA. The scene here is fantastic in Chicago. I’ve seen many bands and DJ’s from Mates of State, Local Natives, Here We Go Magic, Deadmau5, Willy Joy, We Are Scientists, The Morning Benders, Broken Bells, etc. It’s still ever growing and I’ll still keep you all updated on my happenings. Just follow me at (@john_khuu) on twitter. Next weekend, I’ll be seeing The Black Keys w/ The Morning Benders and then Phoenix w/ Toro y Moi. Even thought its Lollapalooza weekend, I will not be attending the festival but will be going to the after parties! I’ve been working diligently on new happenings for bands/DJ’s coming into the scene and it’s hard to handle with a full-time job simultaneously.

A lot of times, I’ll go to the shows by myself to enjoy the music and somehow I end up networking with other music enthusiasts or publication writers in deep conversations about our love of music. I’m not going to lie, after networking with many people, they always end up giving me their card with their contact info/who they write for and such and I have nothing to give them in return. Perhaps, I should work on that! I got an excellent website that many marketers/graphic designers use for their business cards designs! (Thank you marketing team at work!) They seriously helped me out a lot on some layouts.

I hope you’re summer has been fun and relaxing. Go out and go big on shows that you always wanted to see. Just ask yourself “When is the next time you’re going to see them again?” That’s what I always ask myself when I go to these shows. Enjoy it. We really appreciate you following us and as an added bonus, I’ll give you my personal mixtape with material that was featured on the blog as well as my own electro mix that I’m fully releasing soon. Enjoy some new musique!

Feel free to drop a reply to us and we’ll check them soon! We love to hear your guys thoughts and such!

Thank you again on following us.

-John

(Listen to “Bullfighter Jacket” by Minature Tigers)

MINATURE TIGERS | Bullfighter Jacket

Miniature Tigers are an indie rock band which formed in Phoenix, Arizona, United States in 2006. The band consists of Charlie Brand (vocals, guitar), Algernon Quashie (guitar, keyboards), Alex Gerber (bass, vocals) and Rick Schaier (drums).

Miniature Tigers’ sound was forged in the bedroom of frontman Charlie Brand, only to quickly outgrow the space, with the band soon finding itself on stage, in the studio and signed to Phoenix’s Modern Art Records in short order. Brand’s lyrics – a mix of deeply personal insights and playful references to the disparate cultural artifacts that have informed his existence – and effortlessly constructed indie-pop arrangements have made fans in his native Phoenix and beyond. They stretch to Los Angeles, where he reconnected with drummer, collaborator and fellow charter member of the band Rick Schaier while living in Hollywood, and far beyond thanks to the Internet, which it seems people are into these days. Get your hands on this album! Its quite good!

(Listen to “Choice Notes” by Alex Winston)

ALEX WINSTON | Choice Notes

While it’s a great accomplishment to play a single instrument well, it’s a truly rare gift to play many perfectly. With The Basement Covers EP, singer Alex Winston proves she is one of the exceptional few. Classically trained in opera and bred on musical Americana, the beautiful Detroit- native remarkably played each instrument—guitar, piano, drums—on the four-song EP which she recorded in her actual home basement.

Winston’s truly unique and refreshing sound navigates influential pillars as diverse as Feist, The Arcade Fire, Lykke Li and Sheryl Crow.  As the name suggests, the debut offering from Alex consists of five covers of tracks from various artists; Mumford & Sons, Teddy Bears, The Rolling Stones, Jack Penate and Francis and the Lights. She has just finished putting the finishing touches on her debut, Choice Notes, with New York’s hottest new producer whizz kids - The Knocks. This taster of Alex’s incredible talent is now available for free download and acts as a precursor to her debut release of Choice Notes, released on Limited Edition 7” vinyl through HeavyRoc Music on July 27th.

This track is so catchy! We love it. Get your hands on it and put it on the road when you travel because this will lift your moods. Her voice is so lovely.

(Listen to “Summer” by Magic Kids)

MAGIC KIDS | Summer

Magic Kids are from Memphis, TN and they’re a 5 piece group that bring ballads of the summer sound. At first when we heard the track ‘Summer’ it reminded us a lot of Belle & Sebastian. They have the twangy guitars, 60’s esque drum rhythms, strings and pianos accompanying the melody, vocals harmonizing, ah, so lovely. Groups like this always bring us to a good mood. They have with touring with Ariel Pinks Haunted Graffiti and Puro Insting this summer so far. Check out The Magic Kids with the track ‘Summer’.

This release of “Memphis” will be released August 24th on True Panther store.

(Listen to “Abandon” by French Kicks)

FRENCH KICKS | Abandon

French Kicks are an indie rock group from New York City, USA. Formed in 1998, their sound is a mix of garage rock, post-punk, and modded pop.

Three of the original four band members, bassist Jamie Krents, vocalist/drummer Nick Stumpf, and vocalist/guitarist Matthew Stinchcomb, are from Washington, D.C. They were heavily influenced by the hardcore scene that flourished during their youth in the D.C. area. They began playing together in a series of bands while in their teens and then all attended Oberlin College in Ohio, where they continued to play together. The three friends then moved to Brooklyn, New York after college, where the French Kicks were formed with vocalist/guitarist Josh Wise, a Princeton grad who originally hailed from Huntsville, Alabama.

In 1999 they released a self titled EP The French Kicks under the label My Pal God. Soon, after a lot of touring, the band signed to Startime International. They soon released the Young Lawyer EP in 2001. The group then embarked on a tour with fellow garage rockers The Vue and The Walkmen. In 2002 they released their first full length album, One Time Bells. Jamie Krents departed the band the next year, and was replaced on bass by Lawrence Stumpf, Nick’s younger brother. In 2004, their next album, The Trial of the Century was released.

(Listen to “Einmal In Der Woche Schreien” by Siriusmo)

SIRIUSMO | Einmal In Der Woche Schreien

Siriusmo (Moritz Friedrich) is from Berlin, and is signed to MonkeyTown records. He works regularly with Modeselektor, either through collaboration or remixing. Siriusmo has said he will not DJ or perform live, due to conflicting interests. It is said that he is interested in VST production and is a prolific graffiti artist. (via last.fm)

He goes a lot of great things with producing and what makes him stand out to us is that he’ll never perform LIVE for anyone. Unique. This release of ‘The Plasterer of Love’ is a great EP and if you guys would like to buy it, go check it out on amazon or iTunes.

This track reminds us of a summery travel song. We can’t really explain but that’s how we approach this track. It translates to “Once a week, shouting” (according to Google Translator).

(Listen to “Good Enuff (Cash Flow Dub)” by Major Lazer)

MAJOR LAZER | Good Enuff (Cash Flow Dub)

Diplo and Switch are the names behind the head moniker’s of reggae dancehall DJ group ‘Major Lazer’. Diplo from Philly and Switch from the UK combined their talents together exploring some reggae roots. The release of ‘Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do’ was a huge success and now they just released this new EP called ‘Lazers Never Die’. A lot of this material has been released but obviously it wasn’t a final mastered cut from the group. If you saw the recent show of Major Lazer at Pitchfork, you would’ve heard these tracks get dropped on the crowd in Chicago’s Union Park.

Check out this dub of Good Enuff (feat. Collie Buddz and Lindi Ortega)

(Listen to “Make You Run” by Aderbat)

ADERBAT | Make You Run

Aderbat is led by a most sincere and interesting singer, Matt Taylor, whose unique sound and passionate vocal delivery are addicting. His spirited and dynamic voice reminds people of a mix of Thom York and Chris Martin, yet it is truly his own. They are sometimes compared to Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and Coldplay. Aderbat is the epitome of melodic guitar rock, with hooks so punchy and dignified that their success seems inevitable. Audiences have wholeheartedly bought into the escapism offered by the band.

In Doylestown, PA, the last stop on Philadelphia’s northbound train, three musicians gathered behind Matt Talyor’s unique songwriting. After performing Taylor’s solo record for some time, the quartet transitioned to playing and molding his unrecorded material into their debut release in 2002. Aderbat’s first record, Rabbits and Rocks, was recorded over a six month period on a laptop computer in three living room locations. The album caught the attention and ultimately the mixing talents of producer, Andrew Weiss (Rollins Band, Ween, Cafe Tacuba). Rabbits and Rocks was released in the summer of 2004. Soon after the making of the album, guitarist Chris Blasucci left the group to pursue other projects, and experimental guitarist and jazz composer Christopher Covatta was asked to fill in the spaces.

From what we know, this band has broken up and they’re pursuing other music projects.

(Listen to “<3” by Butterfly Bones)

BUTTERFLY BONES | <3

Butterfly Bones from california are making some pretty damn sweet spaced out synth-laden indie pop, fitting in well with the whole ‘chillwave’ sound but appearing much more original and heartfelt to me. take your chance and feel like being at a secret mgmt meets cut copy jam session and enter a world of moog solos, surf guitars and catchy vocals with ‘<3’, the first track off the upcoming new butterfly bones album!”
-DISCODUST

“This Bay Area quartet delivers their unapologetic pop with one hand on the laptop keyboard, a tongue pressed firmly in the cheek, and a booty that’s ready to get groovy on the dance floor. The computer generated beats, are-you-kidding-me synth riffs, and laser noises transcend the getting-staler-by-the-day synth-pop genre with a swagger and attitude other pop bands are either too cute or too cool to strut. Not only is it useless to resist their charismatic call to dance, but the group is also right there to let you know why: “cause we’re strong, charming, indelible, and elegant.””
-INDIE SHUFFLE

These guy’s are related to ‘Cut Copy’, ‘Passion Pit’, and ‘Starfucker’ a lot due to their electro-indie sound by the fans. They have a lot of potential and if you like any of those bands, I’m sure you’ll get a good feel of what it’s like. Fun electro indie dance music.
